1. This Week's Jumpstart
Most Americans don't understand what it takes to become financially independent, or even self-sufficient,
let alone wealthy -- and it shows. Only 3 percent of the American households have a net worth of a million dollars or more. Only 1 percent of the population become multi-millionaires. The average American has a net worth of less than $15,000, not including home equity. More than half of Americans living today would be destitute without their social security retirement checks. Yet there is more personal wealth in the world than at any previous time in history, and the wealth creating opportunities in the 21st Century are staggering. In America, there is over 22 trillion dollars in personal wealth and more than half of that incredible amount is owned by just 3.5 percent of the population. And, if you think that 3.5 percent of us have inherited their wealth from the estates of their families, think again. Only 20 percent of today's millionaires are from second-generation wealth. The bottom line is that 80 percent of all wealthy people in America are self-made in their own lifetimes. That's part of what this Jumpstart is all about -- to ensure that you are in that top 3 to 5 percent of being healthy, wealthy and wise.
Understanding the compounding of interest, over time, via the use of discretionary income both as debt and assets, is one of the most critical components in building financial security. Financier Baron de Rothchild said, "I don't know what the seven wonders of the world are, but I know the eighth wonder of the world is compound interest. Manhattan Island was sold by the Manhattan Indians in 1626 for about 24 dollars worth of cloth and beads. Had they invested that 24 dollars, at even today's very low interest rates, the tribe would have accumulated enough money to buy back all of the properties in Manhattan at today's market prices.
We Americans, typically, save less than four percent of our take-home pay. We view extra money as disposable income and hasten to dispose of it. We buy now and pay later, if ever. We owe more on our automobiles than they're worth when we go to sell them. If you want to be a multi-millionaire, you need to get rid of disposable income thoughts. Never again ask how much the monthly payments are. Monthly payments are full of interest and finance charges. Embrace the discretionary income attitude of Asians, Canadians, British, Europeans and newly arrived immigrants. They save an average of 14 to 25 percent of their incomes. Here are some action ideas to make compound interest work for you instead of against you:
Make a commitment to pay 10 percent, if possible; or if that's not possible, at least 5 percent of your take home pay to your future as your first mandatory payment each month.
Put that amount into a mutual fund or a money market account, or a combination of the two, and consider that account untouchable. No vacations from it. No gifts. No down payments on homes or cars. No college tuition. Call it your life mortgage payment, amortized over 30 years. If you don't pay it on the first of every month, your future will go into foreclosure and you'll end up living in a senior center or in a relative's home as a stowaway.
This week, and every week from now on, pay into your "financial freedom" account as your most urgent bill that needs a partial payment.

2. The Champion Within Article
Live By the Motto That Repeat Business and Profitability are Directly Related to Relationships Based on Trust by Denis Waitley
You never close a sale. You only begin a long-term relationship where both parties win.
Can you think of a successful relationship without mutual trust? Break that trust and you break the relationship. Subvert it and it´s almost impossible to put together again. Creating a long-term relationship takes two or more people whether they´re executives, representatives of labor and management, or husband and wife who are grounded in and operating on the same non-situational honesty.
The central secret of good communication is bringing the other person over to your side by satisfying one of every person´s most fundamental emotional needs: Make him or her feel valued. With rare exceptions, people who feel valued who are allowed to feel important in the sense that they are recognized answer with openness, cooperation and reciprocated respect. If you want respect, be respectable. If you want to be loved, be loveable. If you want to be trusted, be trustworthy. If you want a life-long relationship, listen openly to the other person´s needs. Much more than trying to accumulate money and power, leaders in the new era will acquire good will by helping their associates, customers, neighbors, and loved ones to win. Instead of what can you do for me, we need to embrace the new stewardship role of what can I do for you.
Action Idea At the beginning of each workday, do something special for someone you work with or provide a service for. At the end of each day, say or do something positive for a family member or friend.

3. Seeds of Greatness by Denis Waitley
you can change your life by changing you habits. Here are some guidepost rules regarding change:
Rule 1: No one can change you and you can't really change anyone else. You must admit your need, stop denying your problem, and accept responsibility for changing yourself
Rule 2: Habits aren't broken, but replaced -- by layering new behavior patterns on top of the old ones. This usually takes a least a year or two. Forget the 30-day wonder ones. I don't know where motivational speakers got the idea that it takes twenty-one days to gain a new habit. It may take that long to remember the motions of a new skill, but after many years of being you, it takes far longer to settle into a new habit pattern and stay there. Habits are like submarines. They run silent and deep. They also are like comfortable beds, in that they're easy to get into, but difficult to get out of. So don't expect immediate, amazing results. Give your skills' training a year and stick with it, knowing that your new ways can last a lifetime.
Rule 3: A daily routine adhered to over time will become second nature, riding a bicycle. Negative behavior leads to a losing lifestyle, positive behavior to a wining lifestyle. Practice make permanent in both cases.

4. The Winner's Edge Coaching Tips
This week kicks off a the first of a four part series of coaching tips for the New Year -- I call it paying the price. I've studied and counseled many world class athletes and what inspires me most is watching individuals overcome setbacks or a series of setbacks during their conquest to win. I view those individuals as models for commitment and self-discipline.
So let me ask you a question: Can you remember when you got your first two-wheeler?
It's an experience many people can recall instantly. I'll never forget when I got a bicycle for Christmas. My whole family stood on the lawn watching me try to take my first ride. On that day, I discovered why commitment is definitely like riding a bicycle.
So this week's tidbit (don't worry I'll tie it all up at the end of week 4) is first, you must believe that a machine that can't even stand by itself will transport you safely. Of course, you've seen it work for others, but now you've got to convince yourself that this form of success can actually happen to you.
Think about what it takes from you mentally to accomplish what I've said above. -- DW
