1. This Week's Jumpstart
Random thoughts from Denis Waitley...
- Humility is serving others with Grace.
- Failure is not a person, it's an event. Learn from it,
don't wallow in it.
- About humility: If you have the real thing (or are the
real thing) you don't have to flaunt a loud expensive
imitation. The people who shout the loudest are calling for
help. Confidence can afford to be silent, knowing it will be
noticed.
- The people who try to be impressive are really the least
impressive.
- Your self worth influences your net worth. In other words
your net worth = your achievements. And your self worth
allows you to believe in yourself enough to reach your
achievements.
- EAT DINNER with your kids. It makes your family life
better and gives your children a better shot out there.
2. The Champion Within
Article
Become A Student of Change by Dr. Denis Waitley
As the world becomes more interconnected, events outside
your industry and career have an impact on your business,
your family and your pocketbook. Whatever your daily
routine, it takes place in a larger context of social,
technological, political, economic and cultural change. To
be successful today, you must understand that world. Without
that you won't be prepared to innovate; you'll only be able
to react and to avoid.
Many people will tell you it doesn't matter how
well-informed you are. "You can't do anything about it
anyway," goes the refrain, "so why bother to find out about
things?" Here's a newspaper editorial that sums up this
attitude:
"The world is too big for us. Too much going on, too much
crime, violence and change. Try as you will, you get behind
in the race. It's an incessant strain to keep pace and still
you lose ground. Science empties its discoveries on you so
fast that you stagger beneath them in hopeless bewilderment.
Everything in business and life is high pressure. Human
nature can't endure much more!"
This newspaper editorial reads as if it were written last
week. But it actually appeared more than 168 years ago on
June 16, 1833 in The Atlantic Journal back in the "good old
days!"
How can you avoid becoming a casualty of the "bad new days?"
Take the offensive. Instead of "stewing," start "doing." Pay
attention to the early warning signs of change. Look for
changes in your industry, your family life and your region.
You cannot innovate if your understanding of change is
misinformed, incomplete or outdated.
Success in the new era is heavily dependent upon innovation,
creativity and solving problems for which there are no
precedents. While new technology is often the driver of
economic and social change, the real opportunities are
created by individuals who apply technology in new ways.
Fred Smith, operating outside of the airline industry,
created Federal Express because he saw the trend of speed in
delivery of goods and services.
Your success depends on how well you think. You are not paid
to collect, sort, store or retrieve information, although
you do these things every day. You are paid to interpret
that information and create and implement new ideas. Ask
yourself:
• What can I offer that "they" aren't offering? Where's the
niche that hasn't been developed? How can I add value to the
service or products I promote?
• Where is the market inefficiency? What would make this
process more convenient? How can I do this less expensively?
• What would people pay for that isn't available now? Which
consumer groups and Internet communities are the most likely
prospects who want what I provide? What trends will change
my and their assumptions about the quality of life?
Breakthrough ideas often occur when you are calmly searching
for opportunities. They rarely occur when you are anxious
and frustrated. Close your eyes and dream!

3. Seeds of Greatness by
Denis Waitley (Excerpted from Denis Waitley's Excerpts from The Seeds of Greatness Treasury
Booklet)
Seeds of Confidence: Value is Inside Out
The stretch of the limousine usually is inversely
proportional to the self-esteem of the person riding in it.
Expect the best, plan for the worst, and prepare to be
surprised.
You can only do good, if you feel good.
The price of success is to bear the criticism of envy.
Individuals with good self-esteem can accept or reject the
opinions of others, but never depend on them for their sense
of worthiness.
4. The
Winner's Edge Coaching Tips
This week's offering was a new book I came across, titled
Lefthanded Soldiers. While it's a simple, easy read, the
story is equally touching and powerful. I promise you, you
won't be able to put this little book down once you've
started reading. I'll let author of the book, Gary Eby,
explain...
Lefthanded Soldiers is dedicated to all of those who
have been wounded in life... whether physically,
emotionally, spiritually, or financially and yet, against
all odds, have risen from the devastation to become a
champion!
There are few things in life that move me like seeing
someone overcome adversity. I believe that there are great
men and women from all walks of life, who, because of some
"event" or series of events, have pretty much given up.
Somewhere between brokenness and bitterness many have laid
down their proverbial swords and surrendered. They've been
wounded. Lefthanded Soldiers teaches us that when we
are wounded -- when our "right arms" have been hurt -- that
we can become Lefthanded Soldiers rather than
allowing our circumstances to condemn us to a life of
"what-ifs."
How many great leaders are no longer leading? What will our
society suffer because the leadership we need is somewhere
hurting rather than rallying the troops? What great sickness
is raging because the doctors and nurses who can make a
difference are in need of healing themselves? How many great
sermons will not be preached because an overworked and
underpaid Pastor had a "humpty-dumpty" fall and is allowing
condemnation to keep him out of service? Great public
servants, teachers, volunteers, entrepreneurs, and
politicians, all over the world are waiting... waiting for
someone to care enough to put their arms around them and
say... "Let's get back into the battle of life again! We
need you!"
I believe that great leaders can inspire the "wounded
warriors" among us that they can "engage" in life again and
they can be winners!
In the real world, most of the time, it's the size of your
mess that determines the size of your message. It may not be
pleasant to hear but the size of your testimony is due, in
large part, to the size of your test.
Where would Abe Lincoln have been without the Civil War?
Where would John Kennedy have been without the Cuban Missile
Crisis? David needed Goliath to become King. You cannot not
wear a victor's crown without having fought a few battles!
You can't sing before you talk. You can't run before you
walk. You can't have a message until you've had a mess, and
you can't have a testimony until you've had a test! Let's
look at these lyrics to a song I wrote:
The victor's crown only goes to those who've been in war.
Eagles can't stay in their nest if they want to soar.
Sitting on the side lines you'll never be your best.
You can't have a testimony 'till you've had a test.
God won't send thirst people to an empty well.
Heavens cup sure is sweeter once you've tasted hell.
There's no wine until the grape has gone through the press.
You can't have a testimony 'till you've had a test.
Out of this understanding "Lefthanded Soldiers" was born. I
want to teach you... to teach others that "Change is a door
that can only be opened from the inside!"
The willingness to change can be inspired by others but
change itself is a personal choice. It is "Choice" not
"Chance" that determines your destiny.
Lefthanded Soldiers is a call for the wounded to "get
back into the battle of life!"
Lefthanded Soldiers is a call for leaders to build an
army of renewed, revived warriors. Let's teach them that
they can make a decision to "engage" in life again. Let's
teach them that they can make a difference in the world.
They can be "Lefthanded Soldiers!"
