Freedom From Urgency

Freedom from urgency… That's what will allow us to live a rich and rewarding life. You may have thought your problem was "time starvation," when in truth, it was in the way you assigned priorities in your decision-making process. Have you allowed the urgent to crowd out the important?

Each day we will continue to encounter deadlines we must meet and "fires," not necessarily of our own making, we must put out. Endless urgent details will always beg for attention, time and energy. What we seldom realize is that the really important things in our life don't make such strict demands on us, and therefore we usually assign them a lower priority.

Our loved ones understand when we are preoccupied with our urgent business, but it's hard for us to understand, many years later, whey they appear preoccupied when we finally find some time for them. Harry Chapin's classic song, "The Cat's in the Cradle," is still a mirror reflecting our priorities.

All the important arenas in our life are there awaiting our decisions. But they don't beg us to give them our time. The local university doesn't call us to advance our education and improve our life skills.

I have never received a call or e-mail from the health club I joined insisting that I show up and work out for thirty minutes each day. My bathroom scale has never insisted that I lose thirty pounds. The grocery clerks have never made me put back on the shelves the junk food I put in the cart, nor has a fast-food restaurant ever refused me a double cheeseburger and large fries because of my high cholesterol.

Nor have I ever been subpoenaed by the ocean or the mountains to appear for relaxation and solitude. Yet I receive hundreds of urgent phone messages and emails each week from people with deadlines.

You see, it's the easiest thing in the world to neglect the important and give in to the urgent. One of the greatest skills you can ever develop in your life is not only to tell the two apart, but to be able to assign the correct amount of time to each.

Beginning tomorrow, throughout the day, and every day thereafter, stop and ask yourself this question: "Is what I'm doing right now important to my health, well-being and mission in life, and for my loved ones?"

Your affirmative answer will free you forever, from the tyranny of the urgent!

The Thread of a Dream by Denis Waitley

When I was researching the history of the building of the Brooklyn Bridge as a major illustration for the ideas of success and motivation, I became engrossed with the story of how the first bridge was built over Niagara Falls. You see, to build a bridge over a giant gorge, first you have to get a line over the canyon, from one side to the other. Easier said than done at Niagara Falls.

The engineers couldn't cross the falls in a boat to take the line from one side to the other because the boat would go over the falls. And the airplane hadn't been invented yet. The distance was also way beyond the bow-and-arrow range, which had been a common method at the time of getting the first line across to build a bridge.

The designing engineer, Charles Ellet, pondered the question until he came up with a revolutionary idea. He decided that, while solving the problem, he would also have some fun and generate some publicity for the project. Ellet sponsored a kite flying contest and offered five dollars to the first person who could fly a kite across the gorge and let it go low enough to the ground for someone to be able to grab the string. In 1849, five dollars was a prize similar to a small lottery today. The boy who won the price relished his accomplishment until his death, nearly 80 years later.

It all began with an idea and one thin kite string. The kite string was used to pull a cord across, then a line, then a rope. Next came an iron-wire cable and then steel cables, until a structure strong enough to build a suspension bridge was in place.

I'm struck by how that string is like a single thought. The more vivid and clear the thought, and the more you come back to it, the stronger it becomes -- like the string to the rope to a cable. Each time you rethink it, dwell on it, or layer it with other thoughts, you are strengthening the structure on which to build your idea, like building a bridge over Niagara Falls.

But unlike a kite, there is no string attached to how high and how far your goals may take you. They are limited only by the power of your imagination and the strength of your desire.

This week begin a "string of thoughts" about your goals and dreams and then let your imagination soar with the possibilities!

3. Weekly Seeds of Greatness by Denis Waitley

Seeds of Belief: Attitude is Everything

What you see is who you'll be!

You always project on the outside, how you feel on the inside.

The most important opinion you'll ever have is the one you hold of yourself.

Winners believe in their dreams, when that's all they have to hang onto.

When you are able to applaud yourself, it is much easier to applaud others.

Success is a process, not a status. It is a road that is always under construction.

Never lose an opportunity of seeing anything that is beautiful.

Success is simply a matter of luck. Ask any failure.

One person's ceiling is another person's floor.

A problem defined is half-solved.

Be your best today and that will make you better tomorrow.

4. The Winner's Edge Coaching Tips

Welcome to our Winner's Edge Coaching Tips. I'm excited about this new 10-week series of tips because it's going to make you smile, both on the inside and the out! Having said that, let's jump right in to the first tip of our new topic: Ten Action Steps to Optimism!

Fly with the Eagles! Don't run around with the Henny Pennys who are looking up, chanting, "The Sky is Falling!" Optimism and realism go together. They are the problem-solving twins. Pessimism and cynicism are the two worst companions. Your best friends should be individuals who are the "No problem, it's just a little, temporary inconvenience" type. As you help other people in need on a daily basis, also develop an inner circle of close associations in which the mutual attraction is not sharing problems or needs. The mutual attraction should be values and goals.

This week, when challenges arise, say to yourself, "No problem!", find the positive and see how quickly you can turn that challenge into something great!

6. Customer Feedback

Here are some of the testimonials and comments we received over the past week from our Ezine subscribers. We love receiving comments and feedback from our readers - so keep it coming!

Dear Dr. Waitley, 20 years ago you spoke at a conference I attended in Dallas, TX and I purchased the "Seeds of Greatness" tapes. At that time you signed my book, The Double Win. Had I known then what an impact that were going to have on my life I would have given you the biggest hug!! Thank you for your tireless effort in not only developing people professionally, but also personally by encouraging us to put God and family where they should be – first. So a cyber hug will have to do!! God bless you, your family and your success!
-- Dawn Corrie

Dear Mr. Waitley, my name is Rafael from Mexico. I have made such incredible changes in my life following your basic principles. I am getting out of debt and every day I wake up, I remember the things I read in your ezine and promise myself this day I am not going to be defeted by my worst enemy. ME! I see myself now as my best friend; I am confident about my future and I am preparing myself to earn lots of money. I work in Herbalife and also teach in high school. I would like to share a reflection I made the other day in the class room. I started asking the students what the reason was competitive sports are very popular and why a lot of people watch them around the globe? They answered things like they are role models, it is fun to do, excercise, it is good entertainment and so on. Then I told them, OK let's play football on a plain field, no limits, no teams, no time. I just give you a ball and you play. After two hours, four hours, six hours of doing that, is it fun? No one knows who's winning, no one knows the remaining time, no one knows who their team mates are. But what a difference if I set limits, teams, roles and mainly: SCORE and TIME. If you simply remove score and time in every sport, no one, and I mean no one, is going to watch a game or match in whatever sport. The Olympics would be the most boring thing in the world. Then I told them that is the reason life, in most cases, is SO boring; because you never know if you are winning or losing and you never know what is the remaining time. But what a difference if you set GOALS with score and time. Then you have fun in your life! Then you can make plans and take actions in case you are doing wrong before the time is gone! That's all I wanted to share with you; and I promise myself I'll attend one of your seminars between July and September next year, and I am going to talk with you in person. Thank you for sharing all that knowledge with the rest of the world.
-- Rafael

Thank you Ezine readers, for the sincere and kind words of encouragement and appreciation you sent us this week! -- DW
