1. Weekly Jumpstart

Your Own Magnificent Obsession

All enduring motivation must ultimately come from within the individual. That is why the words empower and envision are so vital to team performance. It must be your inner power and your own personal vision that propels you, not that of your leader.

The success of your efforts depends not so much on the efforts themselves, but rather on your motive for doing them. The greatest companies and the greatest men and women in all walks of life have achieved their greatness out of a desire to express something within themselves that had to be expressed, a desire to solve a problem using their skills as best they could. This is not to say that many of these individuals did not earn a great deal of money and prestige for what they produced. Many did. But the key to their successes was that they were motivated more by an inner magnificent obsession, a passion, than by any thought of profit or identity.

You may recall from history that the exquisitely beautiful armless statue of Venus de Milo was carved by an unknown sculptor. When a farmer dug up the soon-to-be world-famous work of art while plowing his field, a renowned museum curator sadly reflected what a great pity it was that the sculptor would never be recognized by thousands of admirers, nor would he or she ever know how valuable the statue became hundreds of years later.

The farmer retorted that it must have been a labor of love for someone to be able to have envisioned such perfection and brought it forth with just a chisel and a shapeless piece of stone. "Just creating something of such quality," said the farmer, "would have been payment in full for me."

You can't commission a masterpiece. Human greatness can't be externally motivated. It must be compelled from within. A magnificent obsession is the way you want to live, not just the things you want to own. A magnificent obsession is the person you want to be, not the title on your office door or business card. A magnificent obsession is the mind-set that you have, not the diplomas or awards you earn. It is the worldview you claim as your own, not the collection of stamps on your passport. It is uniquely yours, like your fingerprint or handwriting.

Ask yourself this question: "If it weren’t for money, time and personal responsibilities, what would I really love to do with my life?" You and I need to answer it from our own individual perspectives, not simply answer "to help my company, family or country." In addition to these shared visions, autograph your career and life with your own signature.

By personalizing your passion, you will experience the unlimited power from within!

A Compelling 'Why' by Denis Waitley (excerpted from The Psychology of Motivation)

I have a suitcase for you. In that suitcase there is $1 million in cash. The suitcase is sitting in a building that is about an hour's drive from where you are now.

Here is the deal: All you have to do is get to this building in the next two hours. If you get there before the end of the two hours, I will hand you the suitcase, and you will be a million dollars richer.

There is one catch, however. If you are even one second late, our deal is off, and you will not get a dime. No exceptions! With that in mind, what time would you like to leave?

Most people would respond to that scenario by saying that they would leave right now. Wouldn't you?

So off you go. You jump into your car and start driving for the building. You are excited and are already starting to plan how you are going to spend your million dollars. Then, suddenly, the traffic comes to a complete stop. You turn on the radio and find that there has been a series of freak accidents between you and the building and there is no way to get there!

Now what would you do? Would you give up and go back home? Or would you get out of your car and walk, run, hire a helicopter, or find some other way of getting to the building on time?

Now let's suppose for a minute that you are driving to an appointment at your dentist's office. The traffic again comes to a stop. Amazingly, there have been freak accidents between you and your dentist's office. What would you do then? Probably give up, go home, and reschedule!

What is the difference between these two situations? It all comes down to why. If the why is big enough; the how is usually not a problem. This compelling why is connected to your personal objectives, mission statement, or magnificent obsessions. It is the basis of your motivational support beam. Truly motivated people are able to identify and tap into the power of a compelling why in everything they do.

This week find your why, make it big and let it compel you to greater achievement!

3. Weekly Seeds of Greatness by Denis Waitley
(This excerpt was taken from Denis Waitley's newest release, Safari to the Soul)

First Night Reflections

Thoughts, in my tent:

No monuments of steel and glass

No golden arches or endless drone
of fossil-burning, mechanized human
ants crawling on concrete trails to
and from cookie-cutter cocoons

Searching for food, diversion
and meaning

Only vastness and silence of
the savanna ecosystem
as far as the naked eye can see
and ear can hear

Now and then the stillness rudely
interrupted by the piercing sounds
of clarion calling,
zebra’s nervous barking,
lion’s guttural proclamations
of royal presence and dominance

And the irritating bleating of
the endless procession of wildebeest
echoing the life and death struggle
and synergy of millennia upon millennia

In the Savage Paradise of Eden –
The Maasai Mara of Kenya
where our early ancestors migrated
with the herds

Coexisting in harmony with all other
living creations playing their part
In the Maestro’s orchestra

Here in my tent
casting a ten-foot shadow on the
canvas, dancing in the August wind
illuminated by kerosene lantern

Armed with journal and pen,
guarded by a young Maasai warrior
standing just outside as my faithful sentry
throughout the eerie
East African night

I began to scribble recollections
and observations of this adventure –

My own, Safari to the Soul

4. The Winner's Edge Coaching Tips

Hello and welcome back to another week covering our current topic, From Inside to Outside: Enhancing your self-esteem and that of the significant others in your life. This segment of coaching tips will help us master our core values and learn to accept that we are worthy of the best, but not more worthy than the rest. Here is our tip this week:

Dwell on your strengths and talents. Keep a video record of your professional and personal milestones and achievements--positive memories for reinforcement during difficult times. Also, make a video of the older members of your family and senior members of your company relating their experiences and their expertise. Nothing is more important to rookies and the younger generation than wisdom from people who have been there before. And nothing is more important than featuring dedicated employees who may not be getting the attention they deserve.

Next week we'll move on to our next tip, but for this week, take note of you employees, distributors, family members and friends and dwell on those strengths and talents that make each of you unique!

6. Frequently Asked Questions

Every so often we'll take a question about or addressed to Denis Waitley and provide the answer! This week, a reader ask for clarification on one of Denis' poems. Enjoy!

Q: Denis does a little poem on CD 3 from the Jim Rohn Weekend Leadership Event about "The Cautious Man" which I think is brilliant but I would like to know what he means when he says... "Risk taking is the only way to get security. If you seek security you are taking the greatest risk of all but if you take the calculated risk you create your own security." If you could give me your views on this it would be of great help to me. Thanks, F. Harper

A: What I mean by risk-takers being security-makers has a lot to do with a person's belief system and mind set. For example, I went to the Naval Academy and when I graduated there was a clear, 30-year career path that would have guaranteed me with a modest, but certain pension. With the exception of federal, state, and local government agencies and a very few private companies, there is a high risk that there will be no pensions awarded by organizations to guarantee financial security for employees. With China becoming the dominant economic force for the remainder of this century, there will be even less security offered by any union or organization because such guarantees make them uncompetitive in the global market place.

What this all means is that the only security in life comes from within the individual, not something that you look for in an employer. Accordingly, it is imperative that all individuals create their own financial security by a disciplined savings' and investment plan, combined with an attitude that "free time" should be more goal achieving rather than tension relieving.

The fifteen books I have written were done during evening "prime time" when the majority of the population was glued to their TV sets to break the monotony. Early on, I decided not to trade hours for an incremental salary. I felt I could never become financially independent depending on an organization. So I left the guaranteed security of becoming an Admiral over a 30-year period, with a set retirement check, to gain all the knowledge and experience I could in my most passionate field of interest. There have been ups and downs, six children to put through college, heavy health bills, and the usual, but the result, for me, has been that I "chased my passion not my pension" and made a great deal more money, in a much more enjoyable career.

When you take risks, you appear the fool, because in the early stages of embarking on anything new, you feel unsure, awkward and like a real novice. Courage comes with training and experience. People seek security, because change is always unsettling. The problem with seeking security, is that all the risk-takers and entrepreneurs are willing to make any effort, to try any innovative approach, to become successful. They make it very difficult for security-seekers to get ahead, because today's economy requires constant learning and adapting. People with seniority and time-in-rank are not as flexible, and therefore are trying to maintain the status quo.

It isn't that I don't want security. I simply realize that I create my own inner security and financial security by developing multiple streams of income, hedges against surprises, and new skills required in the age of communication and technology.

Sometimes we use too many over-simplified clichés to talk about such complex subjects as risk and security. I hope I have clarified what I mean a little more in this discussion.

Warm regards,
Denis Waitley
